N.J. Awards Nearly $400M to Support Higher Education Infrastructure Improvements

Jul 19, 2023 | Public | 0 comments

The New Jersey Office of Higher Education has awarded nearly $400 million in capital facilities grant funding to colleges and universities across the state. The funding, which is part of the joint solicitation of four revolving Capital Facilities Bond programs, will support 54 infrastructure and technology enhancement projects throughout New Jersey’s higher education sector.

“New Jersey remains committed to investing in our students, so that more bright young people are motivated to pursue a higher education right here in our state,” said Gov. Phil Murphy. “In many respects, that starts with campus facilities and resources.”

Secretary of Higher Education Dr. Brian K. Bridges added, “Through these grant awards, campuses will be able to fund repairs, enhance their physical locations, and build for the future.”

Established by the state legislature, the four revolving bond programs directly address funding for the preservation, renewal, and construction of facilities and equipment at New Jersey’s institutions of higher education, as well as their technology needs.

For example, The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) has been awarded a $33 million capital facilities grant. According to TCNJ, the funds will be used for the college’s “Educating New Jersey’s Next Generation Health Workforce” plan, which will reimagine and renovate instructional and academic support space in Forcina Hall. Among the transformations will be the creation of a new home for the Department of Nursing, Department of Public Health, and the School of Nursing and Health Sciences offices.

TCNJ added that the plan also will refurbish academic support spaces in Roscoe West Hall and enhance network services, connectivity, and access across the campus, while securing equipment to support state-of-the-art pedagogy and research across a number of academic programs.

Another awardee, Ramapo College of New Jersey, will use its $31.7 million grant to renovate Linden Hall into a “new student-centered space.”
