Three Natural Alternatives for Industrial Cleaning

Jul 27, 2023 | Public | 0 comments

For a large corporation, a safe and hygienic workplace is essential. In the United States, the standards of industrial cleaning are set out by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). These guidelines are strict to protect the safety of workers, so the process of industrial cleaning will often make use of harsh and potentially toxic chemicals to ensure that standards are met and that hazardous spills are safely removed.

Unfortunately, the chemicals used in many of these industrial cleaning products often make their way into the natural environment, contributing to growing problems of pollution and biodiversity depletion. But, despite common belief, some natural, household cleaning products may hold the ability to suitably clean such spaces in an eco-friendly manner.

In this guide, we’ll explore three natural alternatives that could be used for industrial cleaning.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is one of the most commonly used non-toxic ingredients that you will find in eco-friendly cleaning products. When combined with water, it forms an alkaline solution that works well to dissolve oils and grease—a common spillage in industrial spaces. It also has the ability to remove rust from metal surfaces, so it may be suitable for the cleaning of equipment and machinery.

A top benefit of baking soda is its ability to clean drains, as it does well to break down and dislodge stuck debris. This may be an ideal place to start for industrial cleaners who want to incorporate natural products into their routine, beginning in places where there will be little to no human contact with the surface.

White Vinegar

As a highly acidic substance, vinegar is effective at breaking down many of the natural compounds that build up to make a stain—as well as other greasy deposits. While not yet formally recognized as a disinfectant, it is widely considered to have such properties and has been found to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria such as E. coli. With this in mind, it has great potential for use in products that clean industrial kitchens, as well as other spaces that require thorough decontamination.

Castile Soap

Castile soap is a vegetable-based soap that is non-toxic and made entirely from natural ingredients. It sits at the same pH level as baking soda, making it a highly alkaline substance that is effective at removing most dirt and grime. Castile soap is often combined with water for an all-purpose cleaner—the same solution can also be used to clean windows. It’s a wonderful option for industrial cleaners who want to lift dirt before sanitizing with a harsher substance and can be used to replace harmful products that are used in this way.

Conclusion

While strong chemicals are sometimes needed to meet the required health and safety standards for industrial cleaning, there may be other options when it comes to more general, all-purpose cleaning supplies. Where chemical solutions can’t be switched or replaced, there is the option for businesses to use more eco-friendly tools—such as mops and spray bottles made from bamboo, wood, or recycled products in place of plastics. This is something for companies to consider as we aim to move towards a more environmentally friendly society.
