Managing signage for your facility

Elevator sign in building

Maintaining your property means including signage as part of your indoor and outdoor maintenance strategy. Making it clear and easy for people to get where they are going avoids frustration, lost visitors, and a negative experience in your building.

Wayfinding

Wayfinding signs make finding a way around your building easy and expedient. Be sure that your washroom, elevator, maps or legends, and exit signage remain visible and up to date. Consider accessibility too, with options like braille, larger fonts and contrasting colours, or tactile pathways that use textures to help people navigate. Technology may also be a benefit, offering screens with digital signage and directions, apps that identify landmarks, and audio cues to help with wayfinding.

Be sure to stay vigilant with any temporary signs like construction, wet floors, detours, and more to keep people safe and informed.

Regulatory signage

Be vigilant in displaying signs to inform visitors about the rules in your building. Areas only accessible to staff, important safety messages, smoking areas, fire safety routes, maximum capacities, and more need to be clearly displayed to keep people following the rules and staying safe. Stay up to date on local and company regulations to ensure that this signage is current to avoid any confusion or potential harm to building occupants.

Exterior signage

Having clear, accessible signs for visitors means a better experience for guests in your building. If your parking garage or lot is far away from your building, it is especially important to include directional signage to make finding your facility as simple as possible. Displaying hours, rates, any vehicle height restrictions, and wayfinding to exits and building access should all be visible in your parking lot.

Keep signs simple with clear messaging and be consistent in style so guests can easily find what they are looking for. Consider eye height, sight lines, and lighting signage that is featured in darker areas to make it easier to spot and ensure that your signage is doing its job. Making signage part of your maintenance strategy keeps guests safe, avoids unnecessary frustration and helps promote a positive experience in your building.
