Chico State, part of the California State University system, recently celebrated the grand opening of its new Behavioral and Social Sciences Building. According to project partner Turner Construction, the 94,000-square-foot facility sets a new benchmark for sustainable construction while fostering cutting-edge research, collaboration, and student success.

Earning LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the building incorporates energy-efficient systems. As the first net-zero building on the Chico State campus, the facility will generate more renewable energy than it consumes.
Sustainable features include solar panels, LED lighting, a chilled beam cooling system, native plants throughout the landscape, and a water-efficient infrastructure. Eco-conscious materials were also used, including benches made from sustainably repurposed valley oak trees, reducing the project’s carbon footprint.
Turner incorporated sustainable practices into the construction of the project by using smart building technology to optimize temporary heating. By deploying sensors and transitioning to renewable diesel, the team reduced carbon emissions, improved air quality, and minimized fuel consumption. Additionally, Turner diverted nearly 80 tons of clean drywall cutoffs from landfills by separating and recycling the material during construction. These efforts lowered the environmental impact while increasing efficiency and cost savings on the project.
“From its net-zero design to its water-saving infrastructure, every element of this building was thoughtfully crafted to reduce environmental impact while providing an exceptional learning environment for students,” said Jim Hull III, construction executive at Turner.
The partners broke ground on the $98 million building in February 2023, earning a spot on Facilities Management Advisor‘s monthly “Under Construction” list of top facility projects. The multifunctional hub is home to nine academic departments, a large 130-seat lecture hall, 22 classrooms, five laboratories, study and breakout areas, an indoor arboretum, and a Love Bird coffee shop by alumna Rebecca Turi. It also houses the Community Legal Information Clinic and the Gender and Sexuality Equity Coalition. Its open floor plan and generous natural light aim to create a welcoming environment where students can learn, study, and connect.
Chico State President Steve Perez said, “It’s a remarkable architectural achievement that not only reflects our dedication to providing students with an incredible learning experience but upholds our longstanding leadership and commitment to sustainability.”
