Free parking enacted at NS health facilities
Nova Scotia’s health care facilities will provide free parking for staff, patients and their visitors, beginning May 1, 2025. The new policy comes with an estimated $19 million annual cost for the provincial government, which has committed to reimburse the health care facilities that charge for parking for their lost revenue.
“I know people have been eager to see this change,” says Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, “Nova Scotians shouldn’t have to worry about parking fees when they’re sick and seeking health care or caring for our loved ones.”
Parking fees are currently charged at 39 of 97 lots across Nova Scotia Health’s various campuses, and at three on-site parking garages at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax. Some of those facilities will now be introducing a ticket validation system to ensure free parking is allotted only to eligible users. A government communique also advises available spaces may vary from site to site depending on “each facility’s unique infrastructure and capacity limitations”.
